Following the popularity of my recent Hot Cross Bun Tasting, I’ve had a few people suggest that perhaps the “Best in Melbourne” blind tasting concept could be extended to other foods.

SPECTACULAR IDEA!

What would you guys like me to find the “best of”?  It needs to be something that I can gather together all in the one place, fresh, so that we can actually compare all the samples next to each other. So it’s not going to work with things like pizza, or pho.

Macarons? Lamingtons? Vanilla slice? I’m thinking definitely fruit mince pies at Christmas.

Meat pies? Sausage rolls? Baguettes?

You tell me!

Love the idea! The Enthusiast did it with mince pies: http://www.theenthusiast.com.au/archives/2009/the-biscuiteer-yuletide-grand-challenge/ – will enjoy seeing what you do!

  2. cloudcontrol says:

Roast duck. Alex at MSG and I volleyed that idea recently. If you do it, can I be on the tasting panel?

  3. Cupcakes! Although that wouldnt be as easy to get in the one place… but many of the supermarkets are doing their own cupcakes now, would be interesting to see how a plain vanilla stacked up against a crabapples plain vanilla.

  4. sawks says:

not just because i'm in-between bites of one right now – banh mi!

  5. Kim - Dale says:

The good old Black Pudding, Boudin Noir, Morcilla. I know there are quite a few butchers in Melb that do thier own. Rob's, Andrew's, Paddy's, Casa Iberica.

  6. Madeleine says:

Vanilla slice defaintly! Macarons? Pie (sweet and savoury), Tart, Sandwich/panini, croissant, types of bread (sourdough, french loaf etc, portugese tarts, custard/egg custard tart

    Do something you love eating!

Love your blog btw, big fan

  7. MJ says:

    baguettes!
    Best sponge cake
    bread
    best crossiant (chocolate of course!)

  8. Margie says:

    Oh, lamingtons please.
    Sourdough bread

  9. Vanilla Slice and count me in as tasting panel please. Love them!

  10. Fel says:

Macarons and artisan walnut bread? Many bakeries like Noisette, Fatto a natto, Phillipas, Broiche all have walnut bread but so hard to choose the best!!!

  11. Megan says:

    @imasugarjunkie Cupcakes! Yes more cupcakes!
Or any kind of dessert. Cheesecakes! Flans! or maybe those are too sweet. Perhaps the classic pie-making contests.

  12. Barbarella says:

macarons! If you need a hand I'm putting mine in the air!
almond croissant, sausage roll, muffin (so hard to get right!)

  13. Emily says:

I think ice-cream (though its not particularly suitable as we are going in to Winter). The great thing is you could amass the collection over a little bit of time, freeze and then taste test all at once.

If you go the macaron I have some strong views on quality macarons in Melbourne (as you may have seen from the recurring macaron taste test posts I have been doing – 11 places tasted, 2 good ones so far). Would happy to provide any assistance with that taste test!

  14. Vanilla slice please!!! If you need any help, I'm up for the tastings hehe

  15. Jen says:

Maybe sushi or sashimi? There's such a big range of quality out there, it'd be good to get it all into a list!

  16. Saucy Thyme says:

i'm with cloudcontrol on the roast duck (take away)! it's something different and there are so many places that sell it now, it'd be interesting to know where turns out to be the best value for money and the tasties!

  17. Hannah says:

Would it be horribly gauche of me to suggest ice cream? I’m thinking the “fancy” ones like Maggie Beer, Gundowring… What can I say, I’m a sweet tooth :P

  18. Tian says:

    lemon tart, or
    cheesecake

  19. Michelle says:

I agree with MJ..best baguettes please or possibly best bagels?
